A judge Wednesday ordered the man accused of stabbing the former mayor of Fall River to be sent to Bridgewater State Hospital to undergo further mental health evaluation for the next three weeks. Corree Gonzales, 31, was arrested after he was detained in connection with the stabbing of Will Flanagan Monday evening. Flanagan was found suffering from stab wounds on Hartwell Street near the Cosmopolitan Dispensary, which is a marijuana dispensary he owns. Surveillance video showed the moment the suspect ran up to Flanagan from behind, before making striking motions toward his head and neck.Flanagan stumbled to the ground before walking toward a nearby housing complex, where he later received aid from responding EMTs. Flanagan, who served as the mayor of Fall River from 2010 to 2014, was taken to a nearby hospital in serious but stable condition.Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn declined to say whether Flanagan was targeted and what a possible motive might be. Quinn was asked whether Gonzales had slipped through the cracks, given his lengthy criminal record. “When you say ‘slipped through the cracks,’ someone who has a long record, it can be concerning that there’s a repetitive nature of it,” Quinn said. “But dealing with each one of the matters, whether it’s him or somebody else, has to be viewed in the light of the specific facts of that case.” Flanagan continues to recover at a hospital. According to Quinn, he is in serious but stable condition. The district attorney’s office has not revealed what sort of weapon was used in the attack or if it has been recovered by investigators.
