The basics:
Of the 320 inpatient facilities named to Newsweek’s 2025 America’s Best Physical Rehabilitation Centers list, five are located right here in New Jersey.
The rankings highlight the centers providing the “best care” for patients recovering from accidents, illnesses or chronic conditions.
Compiled in partnership with data firm Statista, the rankings are based on:
- Quality metrics published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, accounting for 55% of the score
- National survey of physicians, physiotherapists and other health care experts
- Accreditation data from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center
- Google reviews
According to Newsweek, the rankings are based on the 25 states with the highest number of physical rehab centers. The remaining were grouped into the regions of Northeast, Midwest, West and South. New Jersey is included in the Northeast region.
“Rehabilitation is a critical step in recovery that requires trust in both the people and the facility providing care,” Newsweek Health Care Editor Alexis Kayser said in the Aug. 20 introduction of the findings. “The centers recognized in this year’s ranking exemplify excellence in treatment, patient satisfaction, and clinical outcomes.”
The New Jersey centers named to Newsweek’s 2025 America’s Best Physical Rehabilitation Centers list, ranked among their region, are:
A total 12 centers ranked in the Northeast region, which also included Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
What they’re saying
“Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute is proud to be recognized on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Physical Rehabilitation Centers 2025 and to see our hospital ranked highest in the Northeast Region,” Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute CEO Saif Salim said in a statement shared with NJBIZ Sept. 5.
“This award highlights the remarkable and industry-leading care our team of rehabilitation professionals delivers every day,” Salim added. “We meet patients at some of the most difficult crossroads in their lives and know the impact that patient-centered treatment can have on their recovery journeys.”
Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute, a two-story, 38-bed rehabilitation hospital, is a joint venture between Atlantic Health and Lifepoint Health that opened in 2019.

More kudos
Kessler Institute also made the U.S. News & World Report’s recent ranking of Best Hospitals for Rehabilitation, landing at No. 4.
JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute at Hackensack Meridian Health-Edison, No. 33, was the only other ranked New Jersey-based facility on that list.
Kessler Institute was among 22 locations operated by Mechanicsburg, Pa.-based Select Medical to make the list.
“These designations are a testament to the exceptional specialty care our clinical teams provide to patients that enable them to regain mobility and independence so they may return to home and community,” said Select Medical President Tom Mullin.
Getting stronger
In 2024, Newsweek named 300 facilities across the country to the ranking, with three located in New Jersey. Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute (No. 1), Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation – West Orange (No. 2) and Princeton Medical Center (No. 4) also made last year’s list.
Last year’s analysis noted there were more than 1,100 of inpatient rehab facilities in the U.S. The publication did not share that total for the 2025 review.
